Analysis of double-stranded RNAs produced in maize plants infected with maize chlorotic mottle machlomovirus (MCMV) and Northern blots of total RNA from infected plants or protoplasts showed two subgenomic RNAs (sgRNAs). Primer extension was used to map these sgRNAs, which are 1.47 and 0.34 kb long. The transcription start sites are nucleotide (nt) 2970 or 2971 for sgRNA1 and nt 4101 for sgRNA2. The 5' ends of the sgRNAs are similar to one another and to the 5' end of genomic RNA, and 11 nt…

Analysis of the subgenomic RNAs and the small open reading frames of Beet black scorch virus.
TLDR
Results show that BBSV has a novel cell-to-cell movement protein organization that differs in size and sequence from that of other viruses.
Effects of Modification of the Transcription Initiation Site Context on Citrus Tristeza Virus Subgenomic RNA Synthesis
TLDR
Based on results, the CTV replication complex appears to initiate sgRNA synthesis with purines, preferably with adenylates, and is able to initiate synthesis using a nucleotide a few positions 5′ or 3′ of the native initiation nucleotide.
The RNA of maize chlorotic mottle virus - the essential virus in maize lethal necrosis disease - is translated via a panicum mosaic virus-like cap-independent translation element
TLDR
This work identified a structure in the 3’ untranslated region of the viral RNA genome that allows the virus to usurp a host translation initiation factor in a way that differs from host mRNA interactions with the translational machinery.
The RNA of Maize Chlorotic Mottle Virus, an Obligatory Component of Maize Lethal Necrosis Disease, Is Translated via a Variant Panicum Mosaic Virus-Like Cap-Independent Translation Element
TLDR
The translation initiation mechanism of MCMV is characterized and a structure (cap-independent translation element) in the 3′ untranslated region of the viral RNA genome that allows the virus to usurp a host translation initiation factor, eIF4E, in a way that differs from host mRNA interactions with the translational machinery.
Nuclear import of Maize chlorotic mottle virus capsid protein is mediated by importin-α
TLDR
The results demonstrated the nuclear import of MCMV CP and imply a role of ZmIMPα1a and ZmimsIMP α1b during MCVV infection and found that both ZmimPα 1a andZmIMBα1b expression were up-regulated in maize tissues at 7 d and 10 d post MCMv inoculation, respectively.
In silico MCMV Silencing Concludes Potential Host-Derived miRNAs in Maize
TLDR
The results of this study can act as the first step towards the development of MCMV resistant transgenic Maize plants through expression of the selected miRNAs.
A 212-nt long RNA structure in the Tobacco necrosis virus-D RNA genome is resistant to Xrn degradation
TLDR
This work investigates a 3′-terminal small viral RNA (svRNA) generated by Xrn during infections with Tobacco necrosis virus-D, a new and distinct addition to the growing list of Xrn-resistant viral RNAs and stalling structures found associated with different plant and animal RNA viruses.

Primary and Secondary Structural Elements Required for Synthesis of Barley Yellow Dwarf Virus Subgenomic RNA1
TLDR
It is proposed that both primary and secondary structures of the sgRNA1 promoter of BYDV play unique roles in sg RNA1 promoter recognition and transcription initiation.
Subgenomic RNAs mediate expression of cistrons located internally on the genomic RNA of tobacco necrosis virus strain A
TLDR
It is shown that the region upstream of the coat protein promotes internal initiation of translation in vitro, however, this region is functionally inactive in vivo, suggesting that TNV-A genomic RNA is not important for coat protein synthesis in plants.
Analysis of the two subgenomic RNA promoters for turnip crinkle virus in vivo and in vitro.
TLDR
Computer generated secondary structures for the two sgRNA promoters revealed an extensive hairpin just upstream from the transcription start site, which indicates higher sequence conservation for the 1.45-kb sg RNA promoter compared with the 2.7-kb ssgRNA promoter, despite the latter's location within the RNA-dependent RNA polymerase open reading frame.
Transcripts of a maize chlorotic mottle virus cDNA clone replicate in maize protoplasts and infect maize plants.
TLDR
Capped and uncapped transcripts, as well as capped or uncapped RNA synthesized from a clone containing an extra G between the T7 promoter and the 5' end of MCMV sequence (pMCM721), were less infectious than uncapped pMCM41 transcripts in BMS protoplasts and transcripts one nucleotide longer or shorter than uncaps were not able to infect maize plants.
Location of the 5′ Termini of Tobacco Necrosis Virus Strain D Subgenomic mRNAs
TLDR
An analysis of the 5' terminal locations of both subgenomics RNAs and the previously mapped analogous subgenomic RNAs associated with infection with the related TNV-A isolate revealed a marked degree of homology downstream of the initiation sites for each RNA.
Nucleotide sequence, genomic organization and synthesis of infectious transcripts from a full-length clone of artichoke mottle crinkle virus.
TLDR
Time course experiments with Cynara scolymus protoplasts indicate that during AMCV infection both positive and negative strands of genomic and sg RNAs are produced and that sg2 RNA is produced before and at a higher level than sg1 RNA.
Nucleotide sequence and infectivity of a full-length cDNA clone of panicum mosaic virus.
TLDR
Genome organization, physicochemical properties, and biological features indicate that PMV is a member of the Tombusviridae family, however, PMV differs sufficiently from previously described members to warrant its placement in a new genus provisionally designated Panicovirus.
Mapping and expression of southern bean mosaic virus genomic and subgenomic RNAs.
