  The effect of gut fluid ice nucleators and antifreeze proteins on maintenance of supercooling was explored in fire-colored beetle larvae, Dendroides canadensis, via seasonal monitoring of supercooling points, antifreeze protein activity and ice nucleator activity of gut fluid and/or larvae. During cold hardening in the field, freeze-avoiding larvae evacuated their guts and depressed larval supercooling points.
