It has been widely speculated, but as yet unsubstantiated, that commercial ground-source heat pump systems have significantly lower service and maintenance costs than alternative HVAC systems. This paper describes efforts recently undertaken to survey commercial buildings with groundsource systems. Data from 25 such systems are presented here including total maintenance costs in dollars per hundred square feet per year both for in-house and for contractor provided maintenance. The total…

Comparing maintenance costs of geothermal heat pump systems with other HVAC systems: Preventive maintenance actions and total maintenance costs

Total annual heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning (HVAC) maintenance costs were determined for 20 schools in the Lincoln, Nebraska, Public School District. Each school examined provides cooling

Geothermal Heat Pumps in K-12 Schools -- A Case Study of the Lincoln, Nebraska, Schools

Geothermal heat pumps (GHPs) have been shown to have a number of benefits over other technologies used to heat and cool buildings and provide hot water, combining high levels of occupant comfort with

Comparing maintenance costs of geothermal heat pump systems with other HVAC systems in Lincoln public schools: Repair, service, and corrective actions

The Lincoln Public School District, in Lincoln, Nebraska, recently installed vertical-bore geothermal heat pump systems in four, new, elementary schools. Because the district has consistent

Techno-Economic Analysis of Heat Pump and Cogeneration Systems for a Typical Midrise Apartment in the Canadian Climate

This paper presents an analysis of five energy efficient heating and cooling systems for a high performance mid-rise apartment in two Canadian regions: Calgary and Montreal. The analysis was

Design of school building HVAC retrofit with hybrid geothermal heat-pump system

This paper describes a proposed energy-efficient retrofit of a heating, ventilating, and air-conditioning system for a school building in southeastern Wyoming. The existing system consists of six

SIMULATION AND OPTIMIZATION OF GROUND SOURCE HEAT PUMP SYSTEMS

Almost any conventional heating and air-conditioning system may be satisfactorily modeled for energy analysis purposes with a steady-state analysis. Ground source heat pump (GSHP) systems and hybrid

The evaluation of a 4000-home geothermal heat pump retrofit at Fort Polk, Louisiana: Final Report

This report documents an independent evaluation of an energy retrofit of 4,003 family housing units at Fort Polk, Louisiana, under an energy savings performance contract (ESPC). Replacement of the

Application of geothermal heat pumps in a renovated campus building

Recently, geothermal heat pumps (GHPs), which are normally known as ground‐source heat pumps (GSHPs), offer many advantages for heating and cooling of commercial buildings due to the higher energy
