We wish to thank Dr. Kagan for having raised the issue of the existence of characteristic earthquakes because it deserves attention. The original purpose of our paper (Kfirn~k and Klima, 1993) was to investigate the properties of cumulative No(M) distributions in the European -Med i t e r r anean area using a set covering 85 years and homogeneous in magnitude determination.
