Stroke, a major cause of death and disability in the developed world, is usually caused by atherosclerosis, most commonly an arterioocclusive lesion at the carotid bifurcation. Numerous multicentre trials have demonstrated that carotid endarterectomy can reduce the risk of stroke in these patients.
