The theory of large scale dynamos is reviewed with particular emphasis on the problem of magnetic helicity conservation in the presence of closed and open boundaries. It is concluded that in solar and stellar large scale dynamos the production and destruction of magnetic helicity during one cycle may still be accomplished by ordinary Spitzer resistivity.
