Ap star magnetism is often attributed to fossil magnetic fields which have not changed much since the pre-main-sequence epoch of the stars. Stable magnetic field configurations are known which could persist probably for the entire main-sequence life of the star, but they may not show the complexity and diversity exhibited by the Ap stars observed. We suggest that the Ap star magnetism is not a result of stable configurations, but is the result of an instability based on strong toroidal magnetic… Expand

Magnetic fields driven by tidal mixing in radiative stars
Stellar magnetism plays an important role in stellar evolution theory. Approximatively 10  per cent of observed main sequence (MS) and pre-main-sequence (PMS) radiative stars exhibit surface magneticExpand
Three-dimensional evolution of magnetic fields in a differentially rotating stellar radiative zone
The question of the origin and evolution of magnetic fields in stars possessing a radiative envelope, like the A-type stars, is still regarded as a challenge for stellar physics. Those zones areExpand
Longitudinal drift of Tayler instability eigenmodes as a possible explanation for super-slowly rotating Ap stars
Rotation periods inferred from the magnetic variability of some Ap stars are incredibly long, exceeding ten years in some cases. An explanation for such slow rotation is lacking. This paper attemptsExpand

Magnetic Ap Stars in the Hertzsprung-Russell Diagram
The evolutionary state of magnetic Ap stars is rediscussed using the recently released Hipparcos data. The distribution of the magnetic Ap stars of mass below 3 M☉ in the H-R diagram differs fromExpand
Magnetic Fields of Nondegenerate Stars
Magnetic fields are present in a wide variety of stars throughout the HR diagram and play a role at basically all evolutionary stages, from very-low-mass dwarfs to very massive stars, and from youngExpand
A statistical analysis of the magnetic structure of CP stars
We present the results of a statistical study of the magnetic structure of upper main sequence chemically peculiar stars. We have modelled a sample of 34 stars, assuming that the magnetic morphologyExpand
Stable magnetic fields in stellar interiors
We investigate the 50-year old hypothesis that the magnetic fields of the Ap stars are stable equilibria that have survived in these stars since their formation. With numerical simulations we findExpand
The evolution of stable magnetic fields in stars: an analytical approach
The absence of a rigorous proof of the existence of dynamically stable, large-scale magnetic fields in radiative stars has been for many years a missing element in the fossil field theory for theExpand

Context. The evolution of magnetic fields in Ap stars during the main sequence phase is presently mostly unconstrained by observation because of the difficulty of assigning accurate ages to knownExpand
Solar-like oscillations and magnetic activity of the slow rotator EK Eridani

Stability of Toroidal Magnetic Fields in Rotating Stellar Radiation Zones
Aims. Two questions are addressed as to how strong magnetic fields can be stored in rotating stellar radiation zones without being subjected to pinch-type instabilities and how much radial mixing isExpand
