Magnetic reconnection, or the ability of the magnetic field lines that are frozen in plasma to change their topology, is a fundamental problem of magnetohydrodynamics (MHD). Webriefly examine the problem starting with the well-known Sweet-Parker scheme, discuss effectsof tearing modes, anomalous resistivity and the concept of hyperresistivity. We show that the field stochasticity by itself provides a way toenable fast reconnection even if, at the scale of individual turbulent wiggles, the…

Cosmic-Ray Scattering and Streaming in Compressible Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence
Recent advances in understanding of magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence call for revisions in the picture of cosmic-ray transport. In this paper we use recently obtained scaling laws for MHD modes
Turbulence Statistics from Spectral Line Observations
Turbulence is a crucial component of dynamics of astrophysical fluids dynamics, including those of ISM, clusters of galaxies and circumstellar regions. Doppler shifted spectral lines provide a unique
Velocity modification of the power spectrum from an absorbing medium
A quantitative description of the statistics of intensity fluctuations within spectral line data cubes introduced in our earlier work is extended to the absorbing media. The possibility of extracting
Searching for Dark Matter with X-Ray Observations of Local Dwarf Galaxies
A generic feature of weakly interacting massive particle (WIMP) dark matter models is the emission of photons over a broad energy band resulting from the stable yields of dark matter pair

Simulations of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence in a Strongly Magnetized Medium
We analyze three-dimensional numerical simulations of driven incompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) turbulence in a periodic box threaded by a moderately strong external magnetic field. We sum over
Structure of the dissipation region during collisionless magnetic reconnection
Collisionless magnetic reconnection is studied using a 2 1/2-dimensional hybrid code including Hall dynamics and electron inertia. The simulations reveal that the dissipation region develops a

Toward a theory of interstellar turbulence. 2. Strong Alfvenic turbulence
We continue to investigate the possibility that interstellar turbulence is caused by nonlinear interactions among shear Alfven waves. Here, as in Paper I, we restrict attention to the symmetric case
Instability, turbulence, and enhanced transport in accretion disks
Recent years have witnessed dramatic progress in our understanding of how turbulence arises and transports angular momentum in astrophysical accretion disks. The key conceptual point has its origins
Finite‐Resistivity Instabilities of a Sheet Pinch
The stability of a plane current layer is analyzed in the hydromagnetic approximation, allowing for finite isotropic resistivity. The effect of a small layer curvature is simulated by a gravitational
Compressible sub-Alfvénic MHD turbulence in low-beta plasmas.
TLDR
It is found that production of slow and fast modes by Alfvénic turbulence is suppressed, and Alfvén modes in compressible regime exhibit scalings and anisotropy similar to those in incompressible regime.
Thermal Conduction in a Tangled Magnetic Field
The suppression of thermal conduction by a static stochastic magnetic field is calculated for different ratios of the field scale length to the collisional mean free path. The effects of magnetic
On the soft X-ray spectrum of cooling flows
Strong evidence for cooling flows has been found in low-resolution X-ray imaging and spectra of many clusters of galaxies. However, high-resolution X-ray spectra of several clusters from the
