Osteoporosis and magnesium (Mg) deficiency often occur in malabsorption syndromes such as gluten-sensitive enteropathy (GSE). Mg deficiency is known to impair parathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion and action in humans and will result in osteopenia and increased skeletal fragility in animal models. We hypothesize that Mg depletion may contribute to the osteoporosis associated with malabsorption. It was our objective to determine Mg status and bone mass in GSE patients who were clinically…
Vitamin D insufficiency and the blunted PTH response in established osteoporosis: the role of magnesium deficiency
TLDR
This study confirms that in patients with established osteoporosis, there is also a distinct group with a low vitamin D and a blunted PTH level and that Mg deficiency (as measured by the Mg loading test) is an important contributing factor.
Skeletal and Hormonal Effects of Magnesium Deficiency
TLDR
The notion at dietary Mg intake at levels not uncommon in humans may perturb bone and mineral metabolism and be a risk factor for osteoporosis is supported.
Magnesium deficiency and osteoporosis: animal and human observations.
TLDR
Animal and human evidence of the association of Mg deficiency with osteoporosis is reviewed and possible mechanisms by which this may occur are explored.
The association of bone mineral density and parathyroid hormone with serum magnesium in adult patients with sickle-cell anaemia
TLDR
Results indicate that serum Mg may be a co-contributing factor in causing low BMD in sickle-cell anaemia patients, and it is prudent to monitor sMg routinely in this patient population and treat the condition whenever possible.
Coeliac Disease and Bone & Calcium Disorders mellitus

Bone and calcium metabolism abnormalities, mainly resulting in osteopoenia and osteoporosis, have long been recognized as a complication of untreated coeliac disease (CD). It has also been reported
Prolonged Magnesium Deficiency Causes Osteoporosis in the Rat
TLDR
Experimental induced prolonged Mg deficiency causes osteoporosis in rats and the diminution of the trabecular bone volume, in relation to tissue volume (BV/TV and the increase in the degree of trabECular interconnection (TBPf) indicated osteopsorosis.
Experimentally induced prolonged magnesium deficiency causes osteoporosis in the rat.
TLDR
Keeping rats for 1 year on a Mg-deficient diet gives rise to the appearance of osteoporosis, which is characterized by lowering of BMD, increased bone fragility, and altered bone architecture.
Osteoporosis : the role of micronutrients 1 – 4
Osteoporosis and low bone mass are currently estimated to be a major public health threat. Adequate nutrition plays a major role in the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis; the micronutrients of

TLDR
Healthcare professionals need to be aware of the importance of adequate calcium and vitamin D intakes (easily monitored by serum 25(OH)D) for optimal bone health, as well as the prevention of falls and fractures.
Magnesium in man: implications for health and disease.
TLDR
An extensive and comprehensive overview of Mg(2+) research over the last few decades is provided, focusing on the regulation of M g(2+) homeostasis in the intestine, kidney, and bone and disturbances which may result in hypomagnesemia.

FUNCTIONAL HYPOPARATHYROIDISM AND PARATHYROID HORMONE END‐ORGAN RESISTANCE IN HUMAN MAGNESIUM DEFICIENCY
TLDR
Evidence is provided for impaired parathyroid gland function in most of the magnesium deficient patients with hypocalcaemia, and the rapidity with which serum IPTH rose in response to magnesium therapy indicates that this may reflect a defect inParathyroid hormone (PTH) secretion rather than its biosynthesis.
Vitamin D resistance in magnesium deficiency.
TLDR
It appears that magnesium facilitates the release of calcium from bone in the presence of adequate amounts of vitamin D and parathormone, and simultaneously corrected the hypomagnesemia and hypocalcemia.
Low serum concentrations of 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D in human magnesium deficiency.
TLDR
The data show that serum 1,25-(OH)2D concentrations are frequently low in patients with magnesium deficiency and may remain low even after 5-13 days of parenteral magnesium therapy, and suggest that a normal 1, 25-(OH]2D level is not required for the PTH-mediated calcemic response to magnesium administration.
Hypomagnesemia and the parathyroid hormone-vitamin D endocrine system in children with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus: effects of magnesium administration.
TLDR
It is suggested that magnesium deficiency plays a pivotal role in altering mineral homeostasis in insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus.
Determination of intracellular free magnesium by nuclear magnetic resonance in human magnesium deficiency.
TLDR
There was a progressive fall in both the sMg concentration and RBC Mg2+ during Mg depletion, with a concomitant rise in retention of a parenterally administered Mg load.
An evaluation of several biochemical markers for bone formation and resorption in a protocol utilizing cyclical parathyroid hormone and calcitonin therapy for osteoporosis.
TLDR
Female patients with osteoporosis studied during a 24-h infusion of parathyroid hormone and thereafter withsequential calcitonin therapy showed no significant changes in the biochemical markers of bone formation and only a modest attenuation of bone resorption, suggesting PTH infusion may inhibit bone formation, as judged by circulating biochemical markers.
Effect of gluten-free diet on bone mineral content in growing patients with celiac disease.
TLDR
The data indicate that although osteoporosis complicates celiac disease during childhood and adolescence, GFD alone is able to remarkably improve bone mineralization.
Osteocalcin and its message: relationship to bone histology in magnesium-deprived rats.
TLDR
It is indicated that low-Mg intake during growth can alter the quality and quantity of bone and suggest that Mg deprivation may contribute to the development of osteoporosis.
Intracellular Free Magnesium Deficiency Plays a Key Role in Increased Platelet Reactivity in Type II Diabetes Mellitus
TLDR
It is suggested that type II diabetic patients have intracellular Mg2+ deficiency and that Mg deficiency may be a key factor in leading to enhanced platelet reactivity in type II diabetes, and Mg supplementation may provide a new therapeutic approach to reducing vascular disease in patients with diabetes.
Parathyroid hormone secretion in magnesium deficiency.
TLDR
Investigation of the effect of an acute elevation of the serum magnesium concentration on the concentrations of serum immunoreactive parathyroid hormone (IPTH) in hypocalcemic hypomagnesemic patients and normal individuals indicates that an acute stimulation of PTH secretion induced by magnesium is characteristic of the magnesium-deficient state.
