In 1925 Franz Roh coined the term ‘magical realism’ in reference to a new artistic tendency he saw appearing in European painting. It is unlikely he could have realized how far his notion would travel in both geography and interartistic debate. It has since formed part of Latin American literature, Post-colonial studies, and can now be found in criticism related to India, Africa and beyond; however despite so many people using the term, it still remains obscured with few venturing a definition… Expand
