Although astrocytic gliosis has been linked to failure of axonal regeneration in the adult mammalian CNS, its role is not fully established. We used an in vitro assay to investigate the role of reactive astrocytes and macrophages in influencing axonal growth in the lesioned adult rat optic nerve. Soon after optic nerve transection, the nonpermissive nature of the optic nerve is altered to a permissive state near the lesion.
