This chapter traces the history of machine translation (MT) from the pioneers to the latest research on corpus-based systems. In the early systems of the 1950s and 1960s, rule-based approaches dominated in MT projects, particularly in the United States and the Soviet Union. In this chapter an overview of MT development since its early beginnings in the late 1950s until the present day is proposed and the evolution of MT techniques will be reviewed starting from the traditional approaches—statistical and rule-based MT—and finishing with the latest trends, which include hybrid MT systems, adaptive and neural MT.
