BACKGROUND: Bromelain is a sulfhydryl proteolytic enzyme that can hydrolyze protein, protease or peptide. Bromelain can be found in pineapple stem, fruit and core. Bromelain is composed of 212 amino acid residues with cysteine-25 forming a polypeptide chain that can hydrolyze peptide bonds by H2O. In medicine, bromelain has been developed as antibiotic, cancer drug, anti-inflammatory agent and immunomodulator. In dentistry, bromelain has potential to reduce plaque formation on the teeth and to…

Cytotoxicity of Alpinia galanga Rhizome Crude Extract on NIH-3T3 Cells
TLDR
Investigation of the half maximal inhibitory concentration (IC 50) of ARCE in normal standard fibroblast cell line, NIH-3T3 cells suggested to have low cytotoxic effect in NIH-4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2, 5-Diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) cells found it to be low.

Bromelain Production: Current Trends and Perspective
TLDR
This review aims at presenting a detailed account on the level of achievement on bromelain production from the conventional methods and the current trends and the progress made in the production of recombinant stem bromelsain in Escherichia coli.
Comparative study of extraction, purification and estimation of bromelain from stem and fruit of pineapple plant.
Bromelain is a major proteinase, isolated from pineapple (Ananas comosus). In the plant, bromelain is accumulated in the entire plant to different extent and properties depending on its source. The
Enzymatic frostbite eschar debridement by bromelain.
In vitro Evaluation of Antibacterial Efficacy of Pineapple Extract (Bromelain) on Periodontal Pathogens
TLDR
Bromelain exerts an antibacterial effect against potent periodontal pathogens; hence, it may be used as an antib bacterial agent, although further trial has to be conducted to validate this result.
Modulation of murine tumor growth and colonization by bromelaine, an extract of the pineapple plant (Ananas comosum L.).
TLDR
Bromelaine treatment after tumor cell inoculation significantly reduced local tumor growth, experimental lung metastasis, however, to a lesser, non-significant degree.
Bromelain, from pineapple stems, proteolytically blocks activation of extracellular regulated kinase-2 in T cells.
TLDR
Bromelain, a mixture of cysteine proteases from pineapple stems, is a novel inhibitor of T cell signal transduction and suggests a novel role for extracellular proteases as inhibitors of intracellular signalTransduction pathways.
The Comparison of Antioxidative and Proliferation Inhibitor Properties of Piper betle L., Catharanthus roseus (L) G.Don, Dendrophtoe petandra L., Curcuma mangga Val. Extracts on T47D Cancer Cell Line
TLDR
Investigation of anticancer activity of P. betle, C. roseus, D. petandra and C. mangga extracts on breast cancer cell line T47D, and antioxidant activity found that petandra extracts are more active antioxidant compared to C.Roseus and P.Mangga.
Cytotoxic effects of bromelain in human gastrointestinal carcinoma cell lines (MKN45, KATO-III, HT29-5F12, and HT29-5M21)
TLDR
While promoting apoptosis with involvement of the caspase system and extranuclear p53, bromelain also appears to impair cancer cell survival by blocking the Akt pathway and attenuating Bcl2 and MUC1 oncoproteins.
