Motivation: There are two reasons for the increasing interest in sponges (Porifera). First, these simplest multicellular animals are key organisms to understand molecular evolution of Metazoa. Second, sponges are the richest source for bioactive compounds among all metazoan phyla. In addition, these animals turned out to be good bioindicators in environmental monitoring studies. An Overview on Marine Sponge-Symbiotic Bacteria as Unexhausted Sources for Natural Product Discovery

An overview on bioactive marine symbiotic organisms with specific emphasis placed on the sponge-associated ones is provided and the international scientific community is invited to contribute towards establishment of in-depth information of the environmental parameters defining selection and acquisition of true symbionts by the host organisms.

Origin of Metazoa: Sponges as Living Fossils

It is concluded that molecular biological studies with sponges as model will not only help to understand the evolution of Protoctista to Metazoa but also the complex, hierarchial regulatory network of cells in higher metazoa.

Molecular phylogeny of the freshwater sponges in Lake Baikal

It is concluded that the Baikalian sponges, which have been studied here, are of monophyletic origin and suggested that the endemic species S. papyracea is the phylogenetically oldest, extant, endemic Baikian sponge species.

Lake Baikal: a unique place to study evolution of sponges and their stress response in an environment nearly unimpaired by anthropogenic perturbation.

Nucleotide sequence data support the idea that these sponges are of monophyletic origin and evolved from Spongillidae, and revealed that the endemic sponge species of Lake Baikal are useful as bioindicators to assess the anthropogenic impact on the lake.
