INTRODUCTION Schizophrenia, a multifactorial disorder, is associated with dopaminergic hyperactivity, dysregulated glutamatergic neurotransmission, neuroinflammation and extracellular matrix (ECM) disturbances. MMPs, a group of structurally related proteolytic enzymes, are responsible for remodeling of ECM that maintains synaptic functions and blood-brain barrier (BBB) patency.
