Hemophagocytic syndrome (HPS) is a clinicopathologic syndrome that can be precipitated by a variety of causes and is characterized by a systemic activation of macrophages, which are induced to undergo phagocytosis. Chemokines play an important role in the inflammatory cell recruitment into tissues.
