Abstract Evidence is presented in support of the view that white, generally spherical inclusions observed in irradiated oxide fuels are fission product aggregates. Work on inclusions extracted from a uraniumplutonium oxide (U 0.85 Pu o.15 )O 2 has shown them to consist principally of a molybdenum-ruthenium-technetium-rhodium-palladium alloy with hexagonal crystal structure, containing no detectable fissile material.
