We explore possible systematic errors in the mass measurements of stellar mass black holes (BHs). We find that significant errors can arise from the assumption of zero or constant emission from the accretion flow, which is commonly used when determining orbital inclination by modeling ellipsoidal variations. For A0620−00, the system with the best available data, we show that typical data sets and analysis procedures can lead to systematic underestimates of the inclination by 10° or more. A…

The Origin of Black Hole Spin in Galactic Low-Mass X-ray Binaries

Galactic field black hole (BH) low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) are believed to form in situ via the evolution of isolated binaries. In the standard formation channel, these systems survived a common

THE MASS OF THE BLACK HOLE IN THE X-RAY BINARY NOVA MUSCAE 1991

The optical counterpart of the black hole soft X-ray transient Nova Muscae 1991 has brightened by ΔV ≈ 0.8 mag since its return to quiescence 23 yr ago. We present the first clear evidence that the

On the formation of galactic black hole low-mass X-ray binaries

Currently, there are 24 black hole (BH) X-ray binary systems that have been dynamically confirmed in the Galaxy. Most of them are low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs) comprised of a stellar-mass BH and a

A SWIFT SURVEY OF ACCRETION ONTO STELLAR-MASS BLACK HOLES

We present a systemic analysis of all of the stellar-mass black hole binaries (confirmed and candidate) observed by the Swift observatory up to 2010 June. The broad Swift bandpass enables a trace of

Precise mass and spin measurements for a stellar-mass black hole through X-ray timing: the case of GRO J1655-40

We present a systematic analysis of the fast time variability properties of the transient black hole binary GRO J1655-40, based on the complete set of RossiXTE observations. We demonstrate that the

THE CASE FOR A LOW MASS BLACK HOLE IN THE LOW MASS X-RAY BINARY V1408 AQUILAE (= 4U 1957+115)

There are few confirmed black holes with a mass of less ∼ 4 M ⊙ ?> and no neutron stars with masses greater than ∼ 2 M ⊙ ?> , creating a gap in the observed distribution of compact star masses. We

BlackCAT: A catalogue of stellar-mass black holes in X-ray transients

During the last ~50 years, the population of black hole candidates in X-ray binaries has increased considerably with 59 Galactic objects detected in transient low-mass X-ray binaries, plus a few in

Masses of the visual components and black holes in X-ray novae: Effects of proximity of the components

It is shown that the approximation of the complex, tidally distorted shape of a star as a circular disc with local line profiles and a linear limb-darkening law, which is usually applied when

X-Ray Binaries

This chapter discusses the implications of X-ray binaries on our knowledge of Type Ibc and Type II supernovae. X-ray binaries contain accreting neutron stars and stellar--mass black holes which are

SPECTRAL PROPERTIES OF X-RAY BINARIES IN CENTAURUS A

We present a spectral investigation of X-ray binaries (XBs) in NGC 5128 (Cen A), using six 100 ks Chandra observations taken over two months in 2007. We divide our sample into thermally and

THE BLACK HOLE MASS DISTRIBUTION IN THE GALAXY

We use dynamical mass measurements of 16 black holes in transient low-mass X-ray binaries to infer the stellar black hole mass distribution in the parent population. We find that the observations are

The Mass Distribution of Stellar Black Holes

We examine the distribution of masses of black holes in transient low-mass X-ray binary systems. A Bayesian analysis suggests that it is probable that six of the seven systems with measured mass

GRO J0422+32: The Lowest Mass Black Hole?

We have obtained optical and infrared photometry of the soft X-ray transient GRO J0422+32. From this photometry, we find a secondary star spectral type of M1, and an extinction of AV = 0.74 ± 0.09.

Optical Observations of GRO J1655?40 in Quiescence. I. A Precise Mass for the Black Hole Primary

We report photometric and spectroscopic observations of the black hole binary GRO J1655-40 in complete quiescence. In contrast to the 1995 photometry, the light curves from 1996 are almost completely

Chemical Abundances of the Secondary Star in the Black Hole X-Ray Binary XTE J1118+480

Following recent abundance measurements of Mg, Al, Ca, Fe, and Ni in the black hole X-ray binary XTE J1118+480 using medium-resolution Keck II ESI spectra of the secondary star, we perform a detailed

Theoretical Black Hole Mass Distributions

We derive the theoretical distribution function of black hole masses by studying the formation processes of black holes. We use the results of recent two-dimensional simulations of stellar core

OBSERVATIONAL CONSTRAINTS ON COOL DISK MATERIAL IN QUIESCENT BLACK HOLE BINARIES

THE MASS DISTRIBUTION OF STELLAR-MASS BLACK HOLES

We perform a Bayesian analysis of the mass distribution of stellar-mass black holes using the observed masses of 15 low-mass X-ray binary systems undergoing Roche lobe overflow and 5 high-mass,

The Inclination Angle and Mass of the Black Hole in XTE J1118+480
