Bearing in mind the application to the outer crust of neutron stars (NSs), we investigate the magnetic field decay by means of the fully relativistic Particle-In-Cell simulations. Numerical computations are carried out in two dimensions, in which the initial magnetic fields are set to be composed both of the uniform magnetic fields that model the global fields penetrating the NS and of the turbulent magnetic fields that would originate from the Hall cascade of the large-scale turbulence. Our… Expand

An Investigation into Surface Temperature Distributions of High-B Pulsars
Bearing in mind the application to high-magnetic-field (high-B) radio pulsars, we investigate two-dimensional (2D) thermal evolutions of neutron stars (NSs). We pay particular attention to theExpand
Global Crustal Dynamics of Magnetars in Relation to Their Bright X-Ray Outbursts
This paper considers the yielding response of a neutron star crust to smooth, unbalanced Maxwell stresses imposed at the core-crust boundary, and the coupling of the dynamic crust to the externalExpand

Magnetic field decay in isolated neutron stars
We investigate three mechanisms that promote the loss of magnetic flux from an isolated neutron star. Ohmic decay produces a diffusion of the magnetic field with respect to the charged particles. ItExpand
Magnetic field dissipation in neutron star crusts: From magnetars to isolated neutron stars
Context. We study the non-linear evolution of magnetic fields in neutron star crusts with special attention to the influence of the Hall drift. Aims. Our goal is to understand the conditions for fastExpand
Magnetars: Time evolution, superfluid properties, and the mechanism of magnetic field decay
We calculate the coupled thermal evolution and magnetic field decay in relativistic model neutron stars threaded by superstrong magnetic fields (B > 1015 G). Our main goal is to evaluate how suchExpand
Temperature distribution in magnetized neutron star crusts
The effect of axisymmetric dipolar fields which are either restricted to the stellar crust, “crustal fields”, or allowed to penetrate the core, “core fields”, on the temperature distribution inExpand
Magneto-thermal evolution of neutron stars
Context. The presence of magnetic fields in the crust of neutron stars c auses a non-spherically symmetric temperature distribution. The strong temperature dependence of the magnetic diffusivity andExpand
2D Cooling of Magnetized Neutron Stars
Context: Many thermally emitting isolated neutron stars have magnetic fields larger than 10^13 G. A realistic cooling model that includes the presence of high magnetic fields should be reconsidered.Expand
Physics of strongly magnetized neutron stars
There has recently been growing evidence for the existence of neutron stars possessing magnetic fields with strengths that exceed the quantum critical field strength of 4.4 × 1013 G, at which theExpand
WHISTLER TURBULENCE WAVEVECTOR ANISOTROPIES: PARTICLE-IN-CELL SIMULATIONS
Two-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulations of whistler turbulence in a magnetized, homogeneous, collisionless plasma of electrons and protons are carried out. Enhanced magneticExpand
The Soft Gamma Repeaters as Very Strongly Magnetized Neutron Stars. II. Quiescent Neutrino, X-Ray, and Alfvén Wave Emission
We calculate the quiescent X-ray, neutrino, and Alfven wave emission from a neutron star with a very strong magnetic field, Bdipole ~ 1014 − 1015 G and Binterior ~ (5–10) × 1015 G. These results areExpand
Cascade of whistler turbulence: Particle-in-cell simulations
[1] A two-dimensional electromagnetic particle-in-cell simulation in a magnetized, homogeneous, collisionless plasma of electrons and protons has been carried out, demonstrating a forward cascade ofExpand
