M-theory preons -- solutions of eleven-dimensional supergravity preserving 31 supersymmetries -- have recently been shown to be locally maximally supersymmetric. This implies that if preons exist they are quotients of maximally supersymmetric solutions. In this paper we show that no such quotients exist. This is achieved by reducing the problem to quotients by cyclic groups in the image of the exponential map, for which there already exists a partial classification, which is completed in the…

BPS preons in M-theory and supergravity 1

After introducing the notion of BPS preons as the basic constituents of Mtheory, we discuss the recent negative results in the search for solutions of the D=10 and D=11 supergravity equations

BPS preons in M‐theory and supergravity

After introducing the notion of BPS preons as the basic constituents of M‐theory, we discuss the recent negative results in the search for solutions of the D = 10 and D = 11 supergravity equations

M-theory backgrounds with 30 Killing spinors are maximally supersymmetric

We show that all M-theory backgrounds which admit more than 29 Killing spinors are maximally supersymmetric. In particular, we find that the supercovariant curvature of all backgrounds which preserve

BPS preons and the AdS-M-algebra

We present here the AdS generalization of BPS preons, which were introduced as the hypothetical constituents of M-theory preserving all but one supersymmetries. Our construction, suggested by the

Supersymmetric Quotients of M-Theory and Supergravity Backgrounds

In this thesis we explore discrete quotients of maximally supersymmetric supergravity backgrounds. Our main focus will be on eleven-dimensional backgrounds preserving all 32 supercharges. We shall

Geometry of four-dimensional Killing spinors

The supersymmetric solutions of N = 2, D = 4 minimal ungauged and gauged supergravity are classified according to the fraction of preserved supersymmetry using spinorial geometry techniques. Subject

Maximally minimal preons in four dimensions

It is shown that there are no simply connected solutions preserving exactly 3/4 of the supersymmetry.

The Killing superalgebra of 10-dimensional supergravity backgrounds

We construct the Killing superalgebra of supersymmetric backgrounds of 10-dimensional heterotic and type II supergravities and prove that it is a Lie superalgebra. We also show that if the fraction

Half-BPS quotients in M-theory: ADE with a twist

We classify Freund-Rubin backgrounds of eleven-dimensional supergravity of the form AdS4 × X7 which are at least half BPS — equivalently, smooth quotients of the round 7-sphere by finite subgroups of

The return of the four- and five-dimensional preons

We prove the existence of -BPS preons in four- and five-dimensional gauged supergravities by explicitly constructing them as smooth quotients of the and maximally supersymmetric backgrounds,

N = 31, D = 11

We show that eleven-dimensional supergravity backgrounds with thirty one supersymmetries, N = 31, admit an additional Killing spinor and so they are locally isometric to maximally supersymmetric

Supersymmetry and homogeneity of M-theory backgrounds

We describe the construction of a Lie superalgebra associated with an arbitrary supersymmetric M-theory background, and discuss some examples. We prove that for backgrounds with more than 24

N=31, D=11

We show that eleven-dimensional supergravity backgrounds with thirty one supersymmetries, N = 31, admit an additional Killing spinor and so they are locally isometric to maximally supersymmetric

On the absence of BPS preonic solutions in IIA and IIB supergravities

We consider the present absence of ν = 31/32 supersymmetric solutions in supergravity i.e., of solutions describing BPS preons. A recent result indicates that (bosonic) BPS preonic solutions do not

BPS states in M theory and twistorial constituents.

This work argues that any BPS state preserving k of the 32 supersymmetries is a composite of (32-k) BPS preons, and extends the M algebra to a generalized D = 11 conformal superalgebra osp(1/64) to relate the B PS preons with its fundamental representation, the D =11 supertwistors.

Supersymmetric Kaluza-Klein reductions of AdS backgrounds

This paper contains a classification of smooth Kaluza--Klein reductions (by one-parameter subgroups) of the maximally supersymmetric anti de Sitter backgrounds of supergravity theories. We present a

Generalised supersymmetric fluxbranes

We classify generalised supersymmetric fluxbranes in type II string theory obtained as Kaluza-Klein reductions of the Minkowski space vacuum of eleven-dimensional supergravity. We obtain two families

N=31 is not IIB

We adapt the spinorial geometry method to investigate supergravity backgrounds with near maximal number of supersymmetries. We then apply the formalism to show that the IIB supergravity backgrounds

A conformal field theory which describes a homogeneous four dimensional Lorentz-signature space-time based on a central extension of the Poincare algebra, which can be interpreted as a four dimensional monochromatic plane wave.

A WZW model based on a non-semi-simple group

We present a conformal field theory which desribes a homogeneous four dimensional Lorentz-signature space-time. The model is an ungauged WZW model based on a central extension of the Poincar´e
