OBJECTIVES In the industrialized world, lymphogranuloma venereum proctitis (LGVP) has been reported only in men who have sex with men. [] Key MethodSTUDY DESIGN The study design comprised a cross-sectional study including 32 men with LGVP and 93 men without LGVP (22 with gonorrheal proctitis, 30 with a non-LGV chlamydial proctitis, and 41 with proctitis of unknown etiology). Factors associated with LGVP were analyzed by (multinomial) logistic regression.

The association between Lymphogranuloma venereum and HIV among men who have sex with men: systematic review and meta-analysis

HIV-positive MSM are disproportionately affected by LGV highlighting the importance of prevention efforts to be targeted to this group and further research is needed to determine whether the association is due to biological or behavioural factors.

The prevalence of lymphogranuloma venereum infection in men who have sex with men: results of a multicentre case finding study

Testing for chlamydia from the rectum and urethra should be included for MSM requesting a sexual health screen, but serovar-typing is not indicated in the absence of symptoms.

Risk factors for rectal lymphogranuloma venereum in gay men: results of a multicentre case-control study in the UK

The association between HIV and rLGV appears linked to HIV-positive men seeking unprotected sex with others with the same HIV status, sexual and drug interests, and such men should be targeted for frequent STI screening and interventions to minimise associated risks.

Lymphogranuloma venereum in men who have sex in men: are we missing a reservoir of infection?

It is difficult to conclude that there is a substantial urethral, or pharyngeal, reservoir of urethal infection in MSM, although it may of course be important in the dense networks within which LGV and HIV are circulating.

Lymphogranuloma venereum among men who have sex with men in the Netherlands: regional differences in testing rates lead to underestimation of the incidence, 2006-2012.

Characteristics of MSM with LGV did not change over time, so existing prevention strategies should be intensified, and regional differences in LGV testing rates limit national LGV surveillance, leading to an underestimation of the real incidence.

The Enigma of Lymphogranuloma Venereum Spread in Men Who Have Sex With Men: Does Ano-Oral Transmission Plays a Role?

An interesting case series of 26 men who have sex with men (MSM) diagnosed in Madrid Spain with lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) proctitis caused by the Chlamydia trachomatis strain L2b, an illustration of an ongoing and established epidemic among gay men living in Western cities across the globe.

Lymphogranuloma venereum proctocolitis: a silent endemic disease in men who have sex with men in industrialised countries

A previously non-described serovar, L2b, has been identified as the main causative agent of the LGV epidemic and has additional public health implications since LGV may facilitate the transmission and acquisition of HIV and other STD.

Lymphogranuloma venereum diagnoses among men who have sex with men in the UK: interpreting a cross-sectional study using an epidemic phase-specific framework

Rapid epidemic growth coincided with an intensification of unprotected sexual activity among a core population of HIV-positive MSM, and efforts to develop innovative interventions for this hard-to-reach population are needed.

Is there a reservoir of sub-clinical lymphogranuloma venereum and non-LGV Chlamydia trachomatis infection in men who have sex with men?

If a reservoir of sub-clinical LGV infection exists in men who have sex with men (MSM), as this finding might account for the recent rise in lymphogranuloma venereum (LGV) Chlamydia trachomatis infections among MSM in Canada, it is found that unprotected anopenetrative intercourse, rectal enema and drug use were associated with non-LGV C. trachmatis infections.

LGV testing is recommended for MSM with anorectal chlamydia and either proctitis detected by proctoscopic examination, > 10 white blood cells/high-power field detected on an anoretectal smear specimen, or HIV seropositivity is proposed.

The case of a white bisexual male who presented with a painful perianal ulcer, inguinal lymphadenitis, and concomitant infection with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1) illustrates that early LGV may mimic other genital ulcer diseases, such as genital herpes or chancroid, especially in HIV infected patients.
