We report Hubble Space Telescope/Cosmic Origins Spectrograph observations of the Lyα emission and interstellar absorption lines in a sample of 10 star-forming galaxies at z ∼ 0.2. Selected on the basis of high equivalent width optical emission lines, the sample, dubbed “Green Peas,” make some of the best analogs for young galaxies in an early universe. We detect Lyα emission in all ten galaxies, and 9/10 show double-peaked line profiles suggestive of low H i column density. We measure Lyα/H…

Neutral Gas Properties and Lyα Escape in Extreme Green Pea Galaxies
• Physics
The Astrophysical Journal

Mechanisms regulating the escape of Lyα photons and ionizing radiation remain poorly understood. To study these processes, we analyze Very Large Array 21 cm observations of one Green Pea (GP),
Puzzling Lyman-alpha line profiles in green pea galaxies

Context. The Lyman-alpha (Lyα) line of hydrogen is of prime importance for detecting galaxies at high redshift. For a correct data interpretation, numerical radiative transfer models are necessary
A Close Relationship between Lyα and Mg II in Green Pea Galaxies
• Physics
• 2018
The Mg ii λλ2796, 2803 doublet is often used to measure interstellar medium absorption in galaxies, thereby serving as a diagnostic for feedback and outflows. However, the interpretation of Mg ii
THE Lyα–LyC CONNECTION: EVIDENCE FOR AN ENHANCED CONTRIBUTION OF UV-FAINT GALAXIES TO COSMIC REIONIZATION
• Physics
• 2016
The escape of ionizing Lyman continuum (LyC) photons requires the existence of low-NH i sightlines, which also promote escape of Lyα. We use a suite of 2500 Lyα Monte-Carlo radiative transfer
Lyman Continuum Emission Escaping from Luminous Green Pea Galaxies at z = 0.5
• Physics

Compact starburst galaxies are thought to include many or most of the galaxies from which substantial Lyman continuum emission can escape into the intergalactic medium. Li & Malkan used Sloan Digital
Neutral gas properties of Lyman continuum emitting galaxies: Column densities and covering fractions from UV absorption lines
• Physics

Context. The processes allowing the escape of ionizing photons from galaxies into the intergalactic medium are poorly known. Aims. To understand how Lyman continuum (LyC) photons escape galaxies, we
New Insights on Lyα and Lyman Continuum Radiative Transfer in the Greenest Peas
• Physics

• 2019
As some of the only Lyman continuum (LyC) emitters at z ∼ 0, Green Pea (GP) galaxies are possible analogs of the sources that reionized the universe. We present HST COS spectra of 13 of the most

We studied Lyman-α (Lyα) escape in a statistical sample of 43 Green Peas with HST/COS Lyα spectra. Green Peas are nearby star-forming galaxies with strong [O iii]λ5007 emission lines. Our sample is
FROM MIRRORS TO WINDOWS: LYMAN-ALPHA RADIATIVE TRANSFER IN A VERY CLUMPY MEDIUM
• Physics
• 2016
Lyman-alpha (Lyα) is the strongest emission line in the universe and is frequently used to detect and study the most distant galaxies. Because Lyα is a resonant line, photons typically scatter prior
