One of the main problems encountered in the analysis of ventilation/perfusion (V/P) lung scans for the diagnosis of pulmonary embolism (PE) is difficulty in assessing the size of the perfusion defect, which then influences the probabilistic classification described in the Prospective Investigation of Pulmonary Embolism Diagnosis (PIOPED) study (1).
