We study classical lump solutions in a warped throat where brane inflation takes place. Some of the solitonic or lump solutions that we study here are the (p, q) cosmic strings and their junctions, cosmic necklaces and semi-local strings and generic semi-local defects. We show how various wrapping modes of D3-branes may be used to study all these defects in one interpolating set-up. Our construction allows us to study (p, q)-string junctions in curved backgrounds and in the presence of non…

The intersection of string theory with cosmology is unavoidable in the early universe, and its exploration may shine light on both fields. In this thesis, three papers at this intersection are…

This thesis is concerned with topological solitons of static type in supersymmetric gauge theories and especially vortices of Abelian and non-Abelian kind with an arbitrary gauge symmetry. We put…
DBI N-flation
- Physics
- 2007
We investigate DBI inflation using N multiple branes and show how the configuration is equivalent to a single wrapped D5-brane with flux. We then show how 1/N corrections can be implemented, and we…
Monopole annihilation in cosmic necklaces
- Physics
- 2010
A sequence of two symmetry breaking transitions in the early universe may produce monopoles whose flux is confined into two strings each, which thus assemble into ``necklaces'' with monopoles as…
Collision of cosmic superstrings

We study the formation of three-string junctions between (p,q)-cosmic superstrings, and collisions between such strings and show that kinematic constraints analogous to those found previously for…

We present the first ever calculation of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy power spectra from semilocal cosmic strings, obtained via simulations of a classical field theory. Semilocal…
Cosmological perturbations in inflationary models with anisotropic space-time scaling in a Lifshitz background
- Physics
- 2013
Models of inflation in a gravitational background with an anisotropic space-time scaling are studied. The background is a higher-dimensional Lifshitz throat with the anisotropy scaling z 6 1. After…
Study of structure formation and reheating in the D3/D7 brane inflation model

We study the spectrum of cosmological fluctuations in the D3/D7 brane inflationary universe with particular attention to the parametric excitation of entropy modes during the reheating stage. The…

String theory is a rich and elegant framework which many believe furnishes a UVcomplete unified theory of the fundamental interactions, including gravity. However, if true, it holds at energy scales…

In this paper we study various cosmological solutions for a D3/D7 system directly from M-theory with fluxes and M2-branes. In M-theory, these solutions exist only if we incorporate higher derivative…

We find successful models of D-brane/anti-brane inflation within a string context. We work within the GKP-LT class of type IIB string vacua for which many moduli are stabilized through fluxes, as…

We present the properties of a cosmic superstring network in the scenario of flux compactification. An infinite family of strings, the (p,q) strings, are allowed to exist. The flux compactification…
Uplifting and inflation with D3 branes

Back-reaction effects can modify the dynamics of mobile D3 branes moving within type IIB vacua, in a way which has recently become calculable. We identify some of the ways these effects can alter…
Open string attractors

We present a simple example of a supersymmetric attractor mechanism in the purely open string context of D-branes embedded in curved space-time. Our example involves a class of D3-branes embedded in…
D3/D7 brane inflation and semilocal strings

Among the inflationary models based on string theory, the D3/D7 model has the advantage that the flatness of the inflaton potential can be protected even with moduli stabilization. However, the…
