We have recently shown that sphingomyelinase D toxins from the spider Loxosceles intermedia induce Complement (C) -dependent haemolysis of autologous erythrocytes by the induction of cleavage of cell-surface glycophorins through activation of a membrane-bound metalloproteinase.
