The expression of the WAF1/CIP1 gene product, p21, in enzyme-altered foci (EAF) induced by diethylnitrosamine (DEN) and phenobarbital (PB) was examined. p21 expression in the nucleus of hepatocytes in EAF was decreased compared to surrounding tissue. Fifty-eight percent of all GST-P-positive EAF induced by DEN and 79% of the EAF induced by PB were p21-negative.
