Human fetal adrenals are very active in steroid production. They make large amounts of dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate which is further converted to estrogens in placenta. Fetal adrenals cannot make cortisol efficiently from cholesterol or pregnenolone, but they can convert progesterone to cortisol.
