}BACKGROUND
Low-carbohydrate, ketogenic diets cause mild, subclinical systemic acidosis. [] Key Method Anaerobic exercise performance was evaluated with the Wingate anaerobic cycling test and the yo-yo intermittent recovery test.
RESULTS
The diets were matched for total energy (LC: 2333±158 kcal/d; HC: 2280±160 kcal/d; P=0.65) but differed in carbohydrate content (9±1% vs. 63±2% of energy intake; P<0.001).

Evaluating the effects of a low-carbohydrate diet followed by seven days of carbohydrate loading (Carbo-L) on anaerobic performance in male basketball players found total work, resting values of pH, bicarbonate, and lactate increased significantly compared with the results obtained after the low- Carbohydrate diet.
Effect of a four-week ketogenic diet on exercise metabolism in CrossFit-trained athletes
- Medicine, BiologyJournal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition

Male CrossFit-trained athletes seem to be more prone to shifts in macronutrient utilization (in favor of fat utilization) during submaximal intensity exercise under a ketogenic diet than are female athletes.

In this study KD athletes lost fat mass without any detrimental effects on strength, power and muscle mass, and when the goal is a rapid weight reduction in such athletes, the use of a KD should be taken into account.
Dietary Manipulations Concurrent to Endurance Training
- BiologyJournal of functional morphology and kinesiology
- 2018
Over the past 20 years, research has suggested that strategically reducing carbohydrate availability during an athlete’s training can modify the metabolic responses in lieu of simply maintaining a high CHO diet, yet data showing a direct performance benefit is still unclear.
The impact of keto-adaptation on exercise performance and the role of metabolic-regulating cytokines.
- MedicineThe American journal of clinical nutrition
- 2019
This review provides new insights into the adaptation period necessary for enhancement in skeletal muscle fat and ketone oxidation after sustained nutritional ketosis and highlights metabolically active growth factors and cytokines, which may function as important regulators of keto-adaptation in the setting of exercise and the KD.

A ketogenic diet for reducing obesity and maintaining capacity for physical activity: hype or hope?

The ketogenic diet is a potentially promising diet for reducing obesity while maintaining capacity for physical activity, however, questions surrounding the sustainability of this diet for the long-term remain.

Despite the short duration of competitions and relative long-recovery periods between races, nutrition still plays an important role in sprint performance, so too should intake of energy and macronutrients to prevent unwanted weight gain.

The currently available scientific literature shows that low‐carbohydrate diets acutely induce a number of favourable effects, such as a rapid weight loss, decrease of fasting glucose and insulin levels, reduction of circulating triglyceride levels and improvement of blood pressure, while some less desirable immediate effects such as enhanced lean body mass loss and increased urinary calcium loss are reported.
