Abstract: The techniques used for diagnosis of head louse (Pediculosis capitis) infestation are a source of controversy. Most epidemiologic and diagnostic studies have been done using direct visual examination. The main objective of this study is to compare the efficacy of direct visual examination versus the louse comb method. Plastic detection comb better than visual screening for diagnosis of head louse infestation

It is found that the detection comb is significantly more effective than visual screening for diagnosis; that nits are not a good indicator of active infestation; and that treatment with 1% permethrin was 89·6% effective.

Vaccuuming method as a successful strategy in the diagnosis of active infestation by Pediculus humanus capitis

As presented in this study, the vacuuming method was 2.87 times most likely to detect active infestation, thus it could be adopted as a more accurate method to diagnose active pediculosis.
