Car licences in New Mexico proclaim it to be "the land of enchantment". Having lived and worked at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in the north of the state from 1949 to 1956, I can testify to the aptness of this proclamation in all of its senses. Synonyms for "enchant" include fascinate, captivate, enrapture, charm and bewitch. These words apply to what was going on inside the laboratory, its natural surroundings, the nearby pueblos and the city of Santa Fe, as well as to the other places… Expand
