We review aspects of loop quantum gravity in a pedagogical manner, with the aim of enabling a precise but critical assessment of its achievements so far. We emphasize that the off-shell ('strong') closure of the constraint algebra is a crucial test of quantum spacetime covariance, and thereby of the consistency, of the theory. Special attention is paid to the appearance of a large number of ambiguities, in particular in the formulation of the Hamiltonian constraint. Developing suitable…
An elementary introduction to loop quantum gravity
An introduction to loop quantum gravity is given, focussing on the fundamental aspects of the theory, different approaches to the dynamics, as well as possible future directions. It is structured in
A review on Loop Quantum Gravity
The aim of this dissertation is to review `Loop Quantum Gravity', explaining the main structure of the theory and indicating its main open issues. We will develop the two main lines of research for
Matter in Loop Quantum Gravity
Loop quantum gravity, a non-perturbative and manifestly background free, quantum theory of gravity implies that at the kinematical level the spatial geometry is discrete in a specific sense. The
Loop Quantum Gravity: An Inside View
This is a (relatively) non -- technical summary of the status of the quantum dynamics in Loop Quantum Gravity (LQG). We explain in detail the historical evolution of the subject and why the results
Lessons from toy-models for the dynamics of loop quantum gravity
We review some approaches to the Hamiltonian dynamics of (loop) quantum gravity, the main issues being the regularization of the Hamiltonian and the continuum limit. First, Thiemann's definition of
Anomaly freedom in perturbative loop quantum gravity
A fully consistent linear perturbation theory for cosmology is derived in the presence of quantum corrections as they are suggested by properties of inverse volume operators in loop quantum gravity.
Regularization ambiguities in loop quantum gravity
One of the main achievements of loop quantum gravity is the consistent quantization of the analog of the Wheeler-DeWitt equation which is free of ultraviolet divergences. However, ambiguities
The Quantum Constraint Algebra in Toy Models of Canonical Gravity
The Hamiltonian dynamics of canonical loop quantum gravity remains an outstanding open issue. Since Thiemann’s 1996 definition of the Hamiltonian constraint operator and its subsequent criticism,
Loop quantum geometry: a primer
This is the written version of a lecture given at the ''VI Mexican School of Gravitation and Mathematical Physics'' (Nov 21-27, 2004, Playa del Carmen, Mexico), introducing the basics of Loop Quantum
Spin foam models: the dynamics of quantum geometry
In this paper, we give an overview of the main techniques developed in the context of background independent gravity in order to tackle the problem of the dynamics. We briefly introduce loop quantum

Canonical Quantum Supergravity in Three Dimensions
We discuss the canonical treatment and quantization of matter coupled supergravity in three dimensions, with special emphasis on N = 2 supergravity. We then analyze the quantum constraint algebra;
Background independent quantum gravity: A Status report
The goal of this review is to present an introduction to loop quantum gravity—a background-independent, non-perturbative approach to the problem of unification of general relativity and quantum
Some Comments on the Representation Theory of the Algebra Underlying Loop Quantum Gravity
Important characteristics of the loop approach to quantum gravity are a specific choice of the algebra A of observables and of a representation of A on a measure space over the space of generalized

Mathematical structure of loop quantum cosmology
Applications of Riemannian quantum geometry to cosmology have had notable successes. In particular, the fundamental discreteness underlying quantum geometry has led to a natural resolution of the big
Quantum Gravity : a Progress Report
The problem of reconciling general relativity and quantum theory has fascinated and bedeviled physicists for more than 70 years. Despite recent progress in string theory and loop quantum gravity, a
