In the late 1990s, there was a marked increase in Sweden in long-term sickness absence with mental diagnoses. In the extensive research on burnout, little attention has been paid to the link with sickness absence. Our aim in this study was to discover what caused burnout, or such severe stress that it led to long-term sickness absence (> 28 days).
