Over a period of 9 years a grazing experiment was carried out in the mainland salt marsh of the Leybucht (Niedersachsen) with three stocking rates, namely, 0.5 ha-1, 1 ha-1, and 2 cattle ha-1. These were also compared with an abandoned area. The results are based on sampling of the invertebrates in 1980, 1981, 1982, and 1988, and of the vegetation in 1980 and 1988. The rate of sedimentation is highest in the Puccinellia maritima-zone and decreases with the increase of stocking rates. The Elymus… Expand

Secondary succession on a high salt marsh at different grazing intensities
Succession occurs on a large part of German salt marshes following abandonment or reduction of grazing. Its speed and effect on the biodiversity of salt marshes has been discussed in the literature.Expand
Short-term impact of grazing by sheep on vegetation dynamics in a newly created saltmarsh site
The effects of grazing by sheep at a stocking density of c. 1 sheep ha from August to April on total vegetation cover, diversity of plant species, above-ground plant biomass and concentration ofExpand
Short‐term impact of grazing by sheep on vegetation dynamics in a newly created salt‐marsh site
Grazing had no apparent effect on total vegetation cover and composition of the vegetation, and expansion of the dominant species of the high zone, E. athericus, was not affected by the stocking density used in the study. Expand
Long-Term Effects of Sheep Grazing in Various Densities on Marsh Properties and Vegetation Dynamics in Two Different Salt-Marsh Zones
For conservation management of grassland ecosystems, an important question is under which conditions large grazers induce compositional and structural variation in plant communities, which is aExpand
Vegetation dynamics and plant species interactions under grazed and ungrazed conditions in a western European salt marsh
Comparison of vegetation dynamics over a period of 8 years in grazed and ungrazed conditions and the response of annual species to grazing duration during seedling establishment and the effect of an increase in soil nitrogen availability after cessation of grazing are compared. Expand
Long‐term vegetation changes in experimentally grazed and ungrazed back‐barrier marshes in the Wadden Sea
Abstract Vegetation succession in three back‐barrier salt marshes in the Wadden Sea was studied using a data set comprising 25 years of vegetation development recorded at permanent quadrats. TheExpand
Vegetation change in a man‐made salt marsh affected by a reduction in both grazing and drainage
In order to restore natural salt marsh in a 460-ha nature reserve established in man-made salt marsh in the Dollard estuary, The Netherlands, the artificial drainage system was neglected and cattleExpand
