}The ability to learn and remember individuals is critical for the stability of social groups. Social recognition reflects the ability of mice to identify and remember conspecifics. Social recognition is assessed as a decrease in spontaneous investigation behaviors observed in a mouse reexposed to a familiar conspecific. Our results demonstrate that group‐housed mice show social memory for a familiar juvenile when tested immediately, 30 min, 24 h, 3 days, and 7 days after a single 2‐min‐long…

Rapid and Reversible Impairments of Short- and Long-Term Social Recognition Memory Are Caused by Acute Isolation of Adult Rats via Distinct Mechanisms
- Biology, PsychologyPloS one

It is concluded that acute social isolation rapidly induces reversible changes in the brain neuronal and molecular mechanisms underlying SRM, which hamper its acquisition and completely block its consolidation.

A Temporal Activity of CA1 Neurons Underlying Short-Term Memory for Social Recognition Altered in PTEN Mouse Models of Autism Spectrum Disorder

It is suggested that a temporal activity of dorsal CA1 neurons may underlie formation of short-term memory to be critical for organizing subsequent social recognition but that is possibly disrupted in ASD.

Overexpression of the NR2A subunit in the forebrain impairs long‐term social recognition and non‐social olfactory memory
- Biology, PsychologyGenes, brain, and behavior
- 2014
Evidence is provided that an increased NR2A:NR2B ratio in the forebrain leads to reduced long‐term memory function, including the ethologically important memories such as social recognition and olfactory memory.

The hypothesis that long-term social memory, previously described in mammals, is also present in zebrafish is supported, hence extending the evidence for the presence of this type of memory to teleost fish.

- Psychology, Biology

A protocol is described which effectively and reproducibly measures the social recognition for a juvenile male, a female, a mouse of another strain, and a rat and uses transgenic NR2A overexpression mice to demonstrate how an impairment in social recognition memory may appear.

Normal rats demonstrated two forms of flexible memory expression, transitivity, the ability to judge inferentially across stimulus pairs that share a common element, and symmetry, the able to associate paired elements presented in the reverse of training order, indicating that non-spatial declarative processing depends specifically on the hippocampus in animals as it does in humans.

Rats with selective neurotoxic lesions including all subdivisions of the hippocampal region normally acquired and briefly retained the food odor association, but long‐term memory in these animals was severly impaired in contrast to strong 24‐h retention by intact rats.

Training rats to perform the same recognition memory task in several distinct locations in a rich spatial environment found that the activity of many hippocampal neurons was related consistently to perceptual, behavioural or cognitive events, regardless of the location where these events occurred, indicating that non-spatial events are fundamental elements of hippocampal representation.
