HYPOTHESIS Matrix metalloproteinase 1 (MMP-1) is overexpressed in cholesteatoma. BACKGROUND Cholesteatoma destroys bone, whereas deep meatal skin does not. MMP-1 is a type I collagenase that may be responsible for this destruction.
