Adenosine is a recognized inhibitory neuromodulator and neuroprotective agent in the central nervous system. It is produced both intra- and extracellularly and transported across the cell membrane. Nucleoside transporters thus have a major impact on the extracellular adenosine levels, and consequently adenosine signalling.
