As is well known, supergravity was discovered in 1976 by Ferrara, Freedman and van Nieuwenhuizen, and independently by Deser and Zumino. In 1994, Volkov, one of the co-creators of supersymmetry, posted two preprints to the hep-th archive containing “supergravity before 1976” in the title. He argued that the key ingredients of N = 1 supergravity in four dimensions had appeared in his earlier work with Soroka on the super-Higgs effect. In order to better appreciate his point of view, in this…

These notes is aimed at comparing two difierent approaches to theory of gravity with a fermionic gauge fleld, which possesses the invariance under special transformations called supersymmetry. One of
Brane induced supersymmetry breaking and de Sitter supergravity
A bstractWe obtain a four-dimensional supergravity with spontaneously broken super-symmetry allowing for de Sitter vacua by coupling a superspace action of minimal N = 1, D = 4 supergravity to a
Progress Toward a Theory of Supergravity
As a new approach to supergravity, an action containing only vierbein and Rarita-Schwinger fields (V/suba//sub mu/ and psi/sub mu/) is presented together with supersymmetry transformations for these
Pure de Sitter supergravity
Using superconformal methods we derive an explicit de Sitter supergravity action invariant under spontaneously broken local N = 1 supersymmetry. The supergravity multiplet interacts with a nilpotent
Supergravity before and after 1976
This paper is part of the lecture given at the TH Division of CERN and devoted to the CXXV anniversary of the birthday of Elie Cartan (1869-1951). It is shown how the methods of differential
TOPICAL REVIEW: Lectures on nonlinear sigma-models in projective superspace
N = 2 supersymmetry in four space-time dimensions is intimately related to hyperkahler and quaternionic Kahler geometries. On one hand, the target spaces for rigid supersymmetric sigma-models are
Supergravity Before 1976
A story on how an attempt to realize W. Heisenberg’s idea that the neutrino might be a Goldstone particle had led in its development to the discovery of a supergravity action. 1. Introduction
Possible universal neutrino interaction
Much attention in elementary particle physics has beenpaid recently to the possible degeneracy of vacuumand the respective spontaneous breaking of varioussymmetries. The most direct consequence of

Supergravity is a remarkable theory combining supersymmetry and general relativity. While the theory has many developers from across the globe, we wish to address the question who were the real
Broken Supersymmetry and Supergravity
We consider the supersymmetric Higgs effect, in which a spin-\textonehalf{} Goldstone fermion is transformed away by a redefinition of the supergravity fields and the spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ gauge field
