The availability of the Hipparcos Catalogue has triggered many kinematic and dynamical studies of the solar neighbourhood. Nevertheless, those studies generally lacked the third component of the space velocities, i.e., the radial velocities. This work presents the kinematic analysis of 5952 K and 739 M giants in the solar neighbourhood which includes for the first time radial velocity data from a large survey performed with the CORAVEL spectrovelocimeter. It also uses proper motions from the…
Radial velocities of K–M dwarfs and local stellar kinematics
Aims. The goal of this paper is to present complete radial-velocity data for the spectroscopically selected McCormick sample of nearby K–M dwarfs and, based on these and supplementary data, to
Spectroscopic binaries among Hipparcos M giants , I. Data, orbits, and intrinsic variations
Context. This paper is a follow-up on the vast effort to collect radial velocity data for stars belonging to the Hipparcos survey. Aims. We aim at extending the orbital data available for binaries
Kinematics of B-F Stars as a Function of Their Dereddened Color from Gaia and PCRV Data
AbstractParallaxes with an accuracy better than 10% and proper motions from the Gaia DR1 TGAS catalogue, radial velocities from the Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities (PCRV), accurate Tycho-2
Analysis of peculiarities of the stellar velocity field in the solar neighborhood
Based on a new version of the Hipparcos catalogue and an updated Geneva-Copenhagen survey of F and G dwarfs, we analyze the space velocity field of ≈17 000 single stars in the solar neighborhood. The
The red giant branch in the Tycho-2 catalogue
Based on multicolor photometry from the 2MASS and Tycho-2 catalogues, we have produced a sample of 38 368 branch red giants that has less than 1% of admixtures and is complete within 500 pc of the
Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities for 35 495 Hipparcos stars in a common system
The Pulkovo Compilation of Radial Velocities (PCRV) has been made to study the stellar kinematics in the local spiral arm. The PCRV contains weighted mean absolute radial velocities for 35 495
Revisiting the Local Kinematics of the Milky Way using the New Hipparcos Data
With the new Hipparcos data recently released, we reexamine the kinematics in the solar neighborhood. Two different populations of objects, namely the thin-disk O-B5 stars and the thick-disk K-M
Dependence of kinematics on the age of stars in the solar neighborhood
The variations of kinematic parameters with age are considered for a sample of 15 402 thin-disk O-F stars with accurate α, δ, µ, and π > 3 mas from the Hipparcos catalogue and radial velocities from
Space Velocities of L- and T-Type Dwarfs
We have obtained radial velocities of a sample of 18 ultracool dwarfs (M6.5-T8) using high-resolution, near-infrared spectra obtained with NIRSPEC and the Keck II telescope. We have confirmed that
Spectroscopic binaries among Hipparcos M giants III. The eccentricity-period diagram and mass-transfer signatures
Context. This paper is the third one in a series devoted to studying the properties of binaries involving M giants. Aims. We use a new set of orbits to construct the first (e − logP) diagram of an

The galactic motion field of K0-5 giants from Hipparcos data
We have investigated the motions of all K0-5 stars which have a proper motion in the Hipparcos catalogue and a known luminosity class III (due to the incompleteness of the ongoing classification, the
FIRST RESULTS FROM HIPPARCOS
▪ Abstract After recalling the principle of the Hipparcos mission and of the data reduction, the main statistical features of the final Hipparcos and Tycho catalogues are presented. The results,
Local stellar kinematics from Hipparcos data
TLDR
From the parallaxes and proper motions of a kinematically unbiased subsample of the Hipparcos Catalogue, it is re-determined as a function of colour the kinematics of main-sequence stars that spiral arms are responsible for the non-axisymmetry and that R0/Rd ≃ 3 to 3, where Rd is the scalelength of the disc.
Galactic kinematics of Cepheids from Hipparcos proper motions
The Hipparcos proper motions of 220 galactic Cepheids, together with relevant ground-based photometry, have been analysed. The effects of galactic rotation are very clearly seen. Mean values of the
The Geneva–Copenhagen Survey of the Solar Neighbourhood
Abstract We report on a new survey of metallicities, ages, and Galactic orbits for a complete, magnitude-limited, and kinematically unbiased all-sky sample of 16 682 nearby F- and G-dwarfs. Our ∼ 63
Kinematics of the Galaxy from Hipparcos Proper Motions
From Hipparcos proper motions, we have analysed the local kinematics of the Milky Way from young O-B5 stars, classical Cepheids, and the late-type K-M giants. The components of solar motion along the
The recent star formation history of the Hipparcos solar neighbourhood
We use data from the Hipparcos catalogue to construct colour–magnitude diagrams for the solar neighbourhood, which are then treated using advanced Bayesian analysis techniques to derive the star
The distribution of nearby stars in phase space mapped by Hipparcos - III. Clustering and streaming among A-F type stars
This paper presents the detailed results obtained in the search of density-velocity inhomogeneities in a volume limited and absolute magnitude limited sample of A-F type dwarfs within 125 parsecs of
Vertical distribution of Galactic disk stars - I. Kinematics and metallicity
Nearly 400 Tycho-2 stars have been observed in a 720 square degree field in the direction of the North Galactic Pole with the high resolution echelle spectrograph ELODIE. Absolute magnitudes,
Velocity distribution of stars in the solar neighbourhood
A two-dimensional velocity distribution in the UV plane has been obtained for stars in the solar neighbourhood, using Hipparcos astrometry for over 4000 ‘survey’ stars with parallaxes greater than 10
