In the cerebral cortex, local circuit neurons provide critical inhibitory control over the activity of pyramidal neurons, the major class of excitatory efferent cortical cells. The calcium-binding proteins, calretinin, calbindin, and parvalbumin, are expressed in a variety of cortical local circuit neurons.
