We perform three dimensional radiation hydrodynamic simulations of the structure and dynamics of radiation dominated envelopes of massive stars at the location of the iron opacity peak. One dimensional hydrostatic calculations predict an unstable density inversion at this location, whereas our simulations reveal a complex interplay of convective and radiative transport whose behavior depends on the ratio of the photon diffusion time to the dynamical time. The latter is set by the ratio of the… Expand

Iron Opacity Bump Changes the Stability and Structure of Accretion Disks in Active Galactic Nuclei
Accretion disks around supermassive black holes have regions where the Rosseland mean opacity can be much larger than the electron scattering opacity primarily due to the large number of bound-boundExpand

Three Dimensional Radiation Hydrodynamic Simulations of Massive Star Envelopes
(Abridged) Stars more massive than $20-30M_{\odot}$ are so luminous that the radiation force on the cooler, more opaque outer layers can balance or exceed the force of gravity. These near orExpand
Prompt Radiation and Mass Outflows from the Stream-Stream Collisions of Tidal Disruption Events
Stream-stream collisions play an important role for the circularization of highly eccentric streams resulting from tidal disruption events (TDEs). We perform three dimensional radiation hydrodynamicExpand
Super-Eddington Accretion Disks around Supermassive Black Holes
We use global three dimensional radiation magneto-hydrodynamical simulations to study accretion disks onto a $5\times 10^8M_{\odot}$ black hole with accretion rates varying from $\sim 250L_{Edd}/c^2$Expand
The Planetary Accretion Shock. II. Grid of Postshock Entropies and Radiative Shock Efficiencies for Nonequilibrium Radiation Transport
In the core-accretion formation scenario of gas giants, most of the gas accreting onto a planet is processed through an accretion shock. In this series of papers we study this shock since it is keyExpand
Radiation pressure in super star cluster formation
The physics of star formation at its extreme, in the nuclei of the largest and densest star clusters in the universe - potential massive black hole nurseries - has for decades eluded scrutiny.Expand
On the pressure equilibrium and timescales in the scale free convection theory
Convection is one of the fundamental energy transport processes in physics and astrophysics, and its description is central to allstellar models. In the context of stellar astrophysics, the mixingExpand
Characterizing the turbulent porosity of stellar wind structure generated by the line-deshadowing instability
We analyze recent 2D simulations of the nonlinear evolution of the line-deshadowing instability (LDI) in hot-star winds, to quantify how the associated highly clumped density structure can lead to aExpand
