Literature Research into Natural Language Generation for the Virtual Storyteller

title={Literature Research into Natural Language Generation for the Virtual Storyteller},
  author={M. Hoek},
This paper presents a literature research into generating stories in natural language based on events created by the Virtual Storyteller, a multi-agent system that simulates actors to create a story. The goal was to come up with recommendations for the system design of an NLG system that can create these stories. This system will be based on an existing subsystem of the Virtual Storyteller called the Narrator. The Virtual Storyteller communicates with the Narrator by means of a story data model…

Narration for virtual storytelling
This document describes the design and implementation of a new Narrator agent which uses more sophisticated natural language generation techniques.
Whose story is it anyway? How improv informs agency and authorship of emergent narrative
Within the field of interactive digital storytelling, one goal pursued is to build highly interactive fictional worlds in which a user can have the first-person experience of being a character in a
Ordering Events in Interactive Fiction Narratives

To determine how to concisely specify a possibly non-chronological order for narrating events, a formalization of Gérard Genette’s categories of order and his concept of the time of narrating is developed.
Story and discourse: A bipartite model of narrative generation in virtual worlds
This approach adopts a bipartite model taken from narrative theory, in which narrative is composed of story and discourse, which is defined in terms of plans that drive the dynamics of a virtual environment.
The automatic generation of narratives
The Narrator is presented, a Natural Language Generation component used in a digital storytelling system that generates a narrative in Dutch by carrying out tasks such as constructing a Document Plan, performing aggregation and ellipsis and the generation of appropriate referring expressions.
Makebelieve: using commonsense knowledge to generate stories
An interactive story generation agent that uses commonsense knowledge to generate short fictional texts from an initial seed story step supplied by the user, and the system’s representation of commonsense and techniques for fuzzy, creativity-driven inference are presented.
Curveship's automatic narrative style
The development of the Curveship system has suggested ways to refine narrative theory, offering new understandings of how narrative distance can be understood as being composed of lower-level changes in narrative and how the order of events is better represented as an ordered tree than a simple sequence.
Learning to Tell Tales: A Data-driven Approach to Story Generation
This paper creates an end-to-end system that realizes the various components of the generation pipeline stochastically and follows a generate- and-and-rank approach where the space of multiple candidate stories is pruned by considering whether they are plausible, interesting, and coherent.
The Virtual Storyteller : story generation by simulation
The motivation and approach of the Virtual Storyteller are described, and an overview of the computational processes involved in the story generation process are given.
STORYEVAL: An Empirical Evaluation Framework for Narrative Generation
Research in intelligent narrative technologies has recently experienced a significant resurgence. As the field matures, devising principled evaluation methodologies will become increasingly important
