We show that when a linear quotient map to a separable Banach space X has a Lipschitz right inverse, then it has a linear right inverse. If a separable space X embeds isometrically into a Banach space Y , then Y contains an isometric linear copy of X. This is false for every nonseparable weakly compactly generated Banach space X. Canonical examples of nonseparable Banach spaces which are Lipschitz isomorphic but not linearly isomorphic are constructed. If a Banach space X has the bounded…

LINEARIZATION OF ISOMETRIC EMBEDDINGS BETWEEN BANACH SPACES: AN ELEMENTARY APPROACH

Mazur-Ulam’s classical theorem states that any isometric onto map between normed spaces is linear. This result has been generalized by T. Figiel [F] who showed that ifΦ is an isometric embedding from

Embeddability, representability and universality involving Banach spaces

Given a category of objects, it is both useful and important to know if all the objects in the category may be realised as sub-objects -- via morphisms in the given category -- of a single object in

Topologically transitive extensions of bounded operators

Abstract.Let X be any Banach space and T a bounded operator on X. An extension of the pair (X,T) consists of a Banach space in which X embeds isometrically through an isometry i and a bounded

Approximation and Schur properties for Lipschitz free spaces over compact metric spaces

We prove that for any separable Banach space $X$, there exists a compact metric space which is homeomorphic to the Cantor space and whose Lipschitz-free space contains a complemented subspace

Nonlinear Geometry of Banach Spaces

A Banach space is, by its nature, also a metric space. When we identify a Banach space with its underlying metric space, we choose to forget its linear structure. The fundamental question of

Banach Spaces of Lipschitz Functions

In this chapter we introduce several Banach spaces of Lipschitz functions (Lipschitz functions vanishing at a fixed point, bounded Lipschitz functions, little Lipschitz functions) on a metric space

On the bounded approximation property in Banach spaces

We prove that the kernel of a quotient operator from an L1-space onto a Banach space X with the Bounded Approximation Property (BAP) has the BAP. This completes earlier results of Lusky-case ℓ1-and

Banach spaces determined by their uniform structures

Following results of Bourgain and Gorelik we show that the spaces ℓp, 1<p<∞, as well as some related spaces have the following uniqueness property: IfX is a Banach space uniformly homeomorphic to one

Every separable metric space is Lipschitz equivalent to a subset ofc0+

It is shown that there is a constantK so that, for every separable metric spaceX, there is a mapT:X →co satisfyingd(x, y)≦‖Tx−Ty‖≦Kd(x, y) for everyx, y ∈ X.

Isometries and almost isometries between spaces of continuous functions

We characterize the isometries fromC(X) intoC(Y) whereX andY are compact metric spaces. We give necessary and sufficient conditions on an isometry from a subset ofC(X) intoC(Y) to have an extension

Classical Banach spaces

Springer-Verlag is reissuing a selected few of these highly successful books in a new, inexpensive sofcover edition to make them easily accessible to younger generations of students and researchers.
