The clearance rate of liposomal drugs from the circulation is determined by the rate and extent of both drug release and uptake of liposomes by cells of the mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS). Intravenously injected liposomes initially come into contact with serum proteins. The interaction of liposomes with serum proteins is thought to play a critical role in the liposome clearance. Therefore, in this review, we focus on the role of serum proteins, so-called opsonins, that enhance the clearance…
Liposome Opsonization
TLDR
The role of the liposomal opsonins proposed so far in liposome clearance is discussed and additional, related topics that will be addressed are the cell-surface receptors that might be involved in Liposome elimination from the blood compartment and the effect of poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) modification on prevention of liposomes opsonization.
Prolongation of residence time of liposome by surface-modification with mixture of hydrophilic polymers.
Interaction of Liposomal Formulations of Meta‐tetra(hydroxyphenyl)chlorin (Temoporfin) with Serum Proteins: Protein Binding and Liposome Destruction
TLDR
The study highlights the modes of interaction of photosensitizer‐loaded nanovesicles in serum to predict optimal drug delivery and behavior in vivo in preclinical models, as well as the novel application of NTA to assess the destruction of liposomes.
Stealth liposomes: review of the basic science, rationale, and clinical applications, existing and potential
TLDR
Stealth liposomes can be actively targeted with monoclonal antibodies or ligands and encapsulating active molecules, with high target efficiency and activity by synthetic modification of the terminal PEG molecule.
The effect of polymer backbone chemistry on the induction of the accelerated blood clearance in polymer modified liposomes.

Polysialic Acid Modified Liposomes for Improving Pharmacokinetics and Overcoming Accelerated Blood Clearance Phenomenon
TLDR
The in vivo evaluation showed that PSA modified liposomes (PSA-Lip) afford extended blood circulation in wistar rats and beagle dogs, and the ABC phenomenon did not occur and the IgM antibody was not induced after repeated injections of PSA- Lip.

TLDR
The results suggest that opsonins bind to liposomes depending on the size of liposome and phagocytic cells take up Liposomes in proportion to the extent of opsonization, which is consistent with the size-dependent complement activation.
