The role of lipid peroxidation in the inactivation of alpha 1-protease inhibitor (alpha 1-PI) in the alveolar lining fluid of human subjects has been examined under oxidant stress. Exposure to nitrogen dioxide (NO2) at 4 ppm for 3 h resulted in a significant increase in the amount of lipid peroxidation products in the alveolar lining fluid, with conjugated dienes the predominant species.
