The unsaturated fatty acids that rapidly accumulate during ischemia are thought to participate in inducing irreversible brain injury, especially because they are highly susceptible to peroxidation when the tissue is reoxygenated. Our hypothesis was that peroxidation products of unsaturated fatty acids interfere with the reacylation of synaptic phospholipids, a process essential to membrane repair.
