The lipid composition of neuronal somata and neuritic processes of cultured root ganglia has been determined. Neuronal soma contained 37% of dry weight as lipid (15.4% cholesterol, 4.8% galactolipid, and 57.1% phospholipid). The major phospholipids were phosphatidylcholine and phosphatidyl ethanolamine. Galactolipids consisted of cerebroside and sulfatide in molar ratio 2:1. The neuronal soma contained tetrasialo-, disialo-, and monosialoganglioside.
