Onsager's phenomenological equations successfully describe irreversible thermodynamic processes. They assume a symmetric coupling matrix between thermodynamic fluxes and forces. It is easily shown that the antisymmetric part of a coupling matrix does not contribute to dissipation. Therefore, entropy production is exclusively governed by the symmetric matrix even in the presence of antisymmetric terms. In this paper we focus on the antisymmetric contributions which describe isentropic…

Damped physical oscillators, temperature and chemical clocks
The metaphor of a clock in physics describes near-equilibrium reversible phenomena such as an oscillating spring. It is surprising that for chemical and biological clocks the focus has been
Thermodynamic Consistency and Thermomechanical Dynamics (TMD) for Nonequilibrium Irreversible Mechanism of Heat Engines
The irreversible mechanism of heat engines is studied in terms of thermodynamic consistency and thermomechanical dynamics (TMD) which is proposed for a method to study nonequilibrium irreversible
Is a constant low-entropy process at the root of glycolytic oscillations?
This work measured temporal oscillations in thermodynamic variables such as temperature, heat flux, and cellular volume in suspensions of non-dividing yeast cells which exhibit temporal glycolytic oscillations, suggesting strong coupling between them and calls into question the notion that metabolic processes are essentially dissipative.

The present study presents the study of the nonequilibrium thermodynamics analysis of an LTD kinematic Stirling heat engine model, where a load torque against which the engine does work is introduced and it is found that the response coefficients of the quasilinear relations are symmetric, which is similar to Onsager symmetry in linear irreversible thermodynamics.

By considering a thermodynamic force as gauge field, we extend constitutive equations of Onsager's non-equilibrium thermodynamics to non-linear equations. In Onsager's non-equilibrium thermodynamics,
Detonation of shock-waves and action potentials in lipid interfaces
The plasma membrane undergoes reversible structural changes as a collective system of lipids and proteins during the propagation of an action potential. Recently it has been shown that 2D compression
Dissipation and detonation of shock waves in lipid monolayers
Lipid interfaces not only compartmentalize but also connect different reaction centers within a cell architecture. These interfaces have well defined specific heats and compressibilities, hence
Thermodynamic State of the Interface during Cavitation
Ultrasound and shock waves have been shown to alter the permeability and/or the polarization of cell membranes. The phenomenon of cavitation is believed to play a major role in these interactions,

Memory Effects in Irreversible Thermodynamics
A new generalization of Onsager's theory of irreversible processes is presented. The main purpose is to allow for memory effects or causal time behavior, so that the response to a thermodynamic force
Oscillations in chemical systems. IV. Limit cycle behavior in a model of a real chemical reaction
The chemical mechanism of Field, Koros, and Noyes for the oscillatory Belousov reaction has been generalized by a model composed of five steps involving three independent chemical intermediates. The
The fluctuation-dissipation theorem
The linear response theory has given a general proof of the fluctuation-dissipation theorem which states that the linear response of a given system to an external perturbation is expressed in terms
On the Reciprocal Relations of Onsager
Given any linear relation between forces and fluxes in irreversible thermodynamics, it is shown that redefinition of forces and fluxes by linear combination yields a relation with symmetric matrix.

Chemical oscillations
A chemical reaction is usually thought of as coming together of reactant molecules to form products. The concentrations of initial components (reactants) decrease, and concentrations of products
On the Formalism of Thermodynamic Fluctuation Theory
From the statistical mechanical occupation probability of microstates Einstein has inferred a distribution function for the macroscopic states of a canonical ensemble. The conventional theory of
Fluctuations of systems in finite heat reservoirs with applications to phase transitions in lipid membranes.
It is found that large fluctuations are attenuated when the reservoir has finite size, which has consequences for the compressibility of the membrane since volume and area fluctuations are also attenuated.
