The switching net that has been used as a model of several biological systems is studied using the mathematical concept of finite field. Since every function over a finite field can be represented as a terminating series, all switching nets can be linearized and thus represented by a matrix. In fact two matrices—the function matrix and the transition matrix—both represent the net. These matrices are related by an orthogonal transformation.
