The Sistan Delta in Iran is located at the end of a closed basin with nearly 100% of the supply coming from Afghanistan. This supply is supporting irrigated agriculture in the area and is the source for the lake system around the delta. These Hamoun lakes are ecological very valuable wetlands; a number of them are registered as Ramsar sites. The Iranian government tries to improve the living conditions of the people in the area, among others by providing infrastructure for irrigated agriculture…
Hydropolitics in Hirmand/Helmand International River Basin
Water is the core of all developing activities. Given the introduction of the "sustainable development" concept, water is being perceived as the centrality of all economic and social activities.
International Environmental Conflict Management in Transboundary River Basins
Despite signing a bilateral water treaty in 1973, water utilization in the Hirmand River Basin (HRB) has been a source of dispute between Iran and Afghanistan for many decades. While Iran accuses
Flood Management of Sistan River using Levee
Flood is one of the natural disasters that leave great deal of financial and human losses every year. Application of levee is among the common flood control measures. Sistan Alluvial Plain is
Signatures of human intervention – or not? Downstream intensification of hydrological drought along a large Central Asian River: the individual roles of climate variability and land use change
Abstract. The transboundary Helmand River basin (HRB) is the main drainage system for large parts of Afghanistan and the Sistan region of Iran. Due to the reliance of this arid region on water from
A legal licence for an ecological disaster: the inadequacies of the 1973 Helmand/Hirmand water treaty for sustainable transboundary water resources development
This article questions whether the 1973 Helmand/Hirmand water treaty between Afghanistan and Iran is an appropriate institutional tool for sustainable water resources management in the context of
A New Approach to Incorporating Environmental Flow Requirements in Water Allocation Modeling
The condition of river, wetland and estuarine ecosystems is largely determined by the prevailing flow regime. The flow regime can be described by the magnitude, frequency, timing, duration and rate
A Framework for the Quantification of the Importance of Environmental Flows for Human Well-Being
The natural variation in river flows contributes to the sustenance of river ecosystems and associated goods and services, on which particularly poor communities may depend for their well-being. River
Transferable Principles for Managing the Nexus: Lessons from Historical Global Water Modelling of Central Asia
The complex relationships within the water-energy-food security nexus tend to be place-specific, increasing the importance of identifying transferable principles to facilitate implementation of a

This progress report outlines the main principles for the development of a simple conceptual rainfall-runoff model at the Swedish Meteorological and Hydrological Institute. The HBV-2 Model is based
Estimating fractional snow cover from MODIS using the normalized difference snow index
