The surgery of Dupuytren's contracture has gained a reputation for technical difficulty and unsatisfactory results which is unique for such a benign and common condition. This notoriety has largely arisen from the complications of surgery. The currently accepted operation has been designed as a prophylactic excision of the whole palmar fascia and involves a radical dissection of the palm and dissections of any involved fingers.
